Belize attends CARIFESTA extravaganza

The Belize contingent to the 11th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) have landed in Paramaribo, Suriname. 

Among the group of almost 3 dozen artists and delegates from Belize who are attending the show this year is Aurelio Sho of Ak’ kutan Radio/ Tumul K’in Center of Learning and Adelia Ishim, representing the Toledo district in the Arts & Craft category.

Aurelio Sho is responsible for the Arts & Craft booth with a variety of authentic Maya arts pieces from Blue Creek village (Toledo), Tumul K’in, San Antonio (Toledo) as well as Toledo villages including San Lucas, Corazon, Otoxha and Santa Cruz.

According to Sho, the featured cultural displays include straw hat, Jippi Jappa Basket, Cuxtal, Rose wood carving, Carved Calabash, clay necklace, Bracelets, Headbands, weaved purses among others.

During the course of CARIFESTA, Adelia Ishim will be explaining and demonstrating the process of weaving the Q’eqchi cuxtal.

Also included in the Belize delegation to CARIFESTA XI are the Galen University Band, the Belize National Dance Group and professional painters.
