IDB grant funding for Western Highway rehabilitation
The government of Belize is receiving grant funding from the IDB which will be used for preparatory assessments in the rehabilitation of a section of the George Price Highway.
Under an agreement signed today by Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the Central America regional manager for the Inter-American Development Bank Gina Montiel, the IDB is gifting Belize US$540,000.
A press release issued by the Government information service says that the grant funding is “to support the preparation of feasibility studies and social and environmental assessments for the rehabilitation of 32 miles of the George Price Highway between Belmopan and Benque Viejo del Carmen.”
The official release says that the IDB grant will “support the preparation of an investment program to finance the infrastructure works needed to upgrade and absorb growing traffic volumes on the highway.”
The IDB’s Gina Montiel is currently in Belize for discussions with government about the institution’s 2014/2015 work program with Belize.
