Preventing forest fires event this weekend in Toledo
The annual Race Against Fire bicycle race is set for this Holy Saturday, April 4 in the Toledo district.
The race is part of the annual activities by the Ya’axche Conservation Trust designed to bring awareness of safe use of fire.
According to Communication Officer for Ya’axche Conservation Trust Maximilliano Caal, experts in the environmental field will be present to share valuable information about the safe and sustainable use of fire.
This year’s event is being held on the school grounds of primary school in San Pedro Columbia village starting at 8:30 am on Saturday.
One of the main events of the day is a beach cruiser bicycle race with cash prizes of up to $300.
Farmers are especially being encouraged to attend this year’s event to learn about the risks of fire as the dry season approaches.
Prizes will also be given for the best message against forest fire, and there will be information booths by both Ya’ache and TIDE.
The Parent/Teachers Association of San Pedro Columbia has also organized a grand football marathon in addition to all day food and drinks.
