Belizeans learn to identify native birds

San Ignacio Town. Friday, April 3, 2015. The Belize Botanic Gardens and duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge just outside of San Ignacio town continue to promote education about our country’s native flora and fauna.  

It recently sponsored a Bird and Plant ID course which brought together a group of enthusiasts and tour guides to learn more about Belize’s birds and plants.

The training course was lead by birder and bird researcher Mario Teul.  

The plan identification segment of the training was led by Rudy Aguilar, lead instructor and head gardener at Belize Botanic Gardens and curator at BBG Freddy Tut.  

One of the instructors for the Bird Identification training, Roni Martinez, says that the forum included topics such as bird migration, bird conservation, leadership skills and tricks of the trade.  

“We aim to teach anyone with an interest on birds about the techniques used to successfully identify birds in the field,” says Martinez, who spoke with us via Facebook chat.

Martinez says the Bird Identification course should be offered again in July and anyone wishing to learn more about the birds of Belize as well as the native plants, can book their place in the training now by contacting the Belize Botanic Gardens of duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge.
