Belmopan. Tuesday, April 7, 2015. The Honorable the Prime Minister, Mr. Dean Barrow today left Belize enroute to Panama City, Panama for the 7th Summit of the Americas.
The Summit which will be held on April 10 and April 11, will bring together Heads of State and Government from the Western Hemisphere “to discuss common policy issues, affirm shared values, mobilize ambitions and commit to concerted actions, at national and regional level, in order to strengthen democracy and governance, help reduce poverty and inequities, increase opportunities in the Americas and face new challenges.”
According to the official website of the Summit of the Americas, this year’s gathering of hemispheric leaders will focus on “Prosperity with Equity: The Challenge of Cooperation in the Americas.”
A statement from the office of the Prime Minister says that Mr. Barrow is scheduled to make a presentation on Thursday to a pre-summit forum under the theme “Bridging the Americas: Productive Integration for Inclusive Development.”
Prime Minister Barrow is due back in Belize on Monday, April 13 and during his absence, the Honorable the Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Gaspar Vega is the Acting Prime Minister.
United States media reported today that when the Summit opens on Friday it will mark the first time that the president of Cuba will be in attendance.
President Raul Castro plans to attend the Summit and although no formal meetings are planned between the Cuban leader and US President Barack Obama, the two are expected to have some level of interaction during the two-day Summit.
President Obama will first stop in Kingston, Jamaica for a meeting with Caricom leaders before arriving in Panama City.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow will not be at the Kingston meeting with President Obama, opting instead to send Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington to represent him at that meeting in Jamaica.
