Was a Ladyville man killed over mangoes?
Ladyville, Belize District. Monday, May 11, 2015. Belize is such a closely-knit country that Belizean neighbours usually don’t mind helping themselves to each other’s fruit, mango being a good example.
But when one 60 year old man tried that in Ladyville, Belize District, he was shot to death on Saturday morning.
Daniel Alexander Trapp was found fighting for his life not far from his residence on Egbert Quilter Avenue after being shot while helping himself to a neighbour’s mangoes.
His sister, Alicia Trapp, told reporters today that she still can’t believe how her brother’s life ended.
The late Daniel Trapp had one son and lived most of his life with a drug dependency problem, but was not known to be a troublemaker although he was deported from the United States where he had lived for some time.
Alicia Trapp says neither Daniel nor her had any reason to believe his life would be taken over what she believes is a trivial matter.
She says Daniel readily identified his assailant to all who would listen, including police, but he could not survive the fatal bullet lodged in his chest.
Today, Hilberto Perez, a resident of Ladyville, was charged with murder when he appeared today before the chief Magistrate, Anne Marie Smith.
No plea was taken and Perez was remanded into custody at the Belize Central Prison until his next court appearance on July 22.
