Roman Catholic Church calls for repeal of Petro Caribe Loans Act, 2015
Belmopan, Belize. Monday, July 6, 2015. The head of the Roman Catholic Church of Belize Bishop Dorick Wright and Senator for the Churches Reverend Noel Leslie have called for a repeal of the Petro Caribe Loans Act, 2015.
The major development came this past weekend when on Saturday, via a press release, Senator Leslie explained that his vote in favor of the two General Revenue Supplementary Appropriation Bills and the Amendments to the Petro Caribe Loans Act, 2015 on Wednesday of last week, was in accordance with the majority decision of the body he represents in the Senate.
Reverend Leslie explained that his denomination, which is the Roman Catholic Church, holds a different position than the one he presented in the Senate on July first, hence this past weekend’s clarification and statement.
According to the one page statement “the Roman Catholic Church of Belize and Belmopan holds the view that the Petro Caribe Loans Act, 2015, was devised to correct transgressions in the borrowing and spending of Public Funds. The Church has a duty to denounce any legislation that violates the Rule of Law, the Spirit of Democracy and the Constitution of Belize.”
The bold statement by the Roman Catholic Church ends by saying that as shepherd of 40% of the Belizean population, it “supports and encourages any endeavor by the Government of Belize, to move the nation towards greater transparency and accountability in the management and use of public funds.”
