Swift justice for Gardenia village man who pleaded guilty to charges

Belize City, Belize. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. A 23 year old man from Gardenia will serve 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of keeping a prohibited firearm and ammunition and drug trafficking.

Anthony Zelaya was handed concurrent sentences of 7 years for the prohibited firearm and ammunition, and an additional 5 years in jail after he was unable to pay a fine of $10,000 ordered immediately by CHief Magistrate Anne MArie Smith for the the drug trafficking charge.

The additional five years in prison will be served by Zelaya after he completes the 7 year sentence.

Three other persons who were similarly charged with Zelaya, were freed after the charges were withdrawn against them.

Around 4:45 am today members of the police’s strike team, went to Anthony Zelaya’s residence and executed a search which resulted in the discovery of a sawed-off 16 gauge shotgun, four 16 gauge cartridges and 105 grams of cannabis.
