Prayer for peace and justice held in Santa Cruz village, Toledo
Santa Cruz village, Toledo. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. A gathering of Maya people from several villages in the Toledo district was held over the weekend in Santa Cruz village.
According to a press release issued by the Toledo Alcaldes Association, the purpose of Sunday’s gathering was to pray for peace and justice.
The TAA release says that Maya villagers, spiritual leaders, and Alcaldes organized the prayer for justice in the community of Santa Cruz because they recognize that the issues facing Santa Cruz village concerns all Maya communities and all of Belize.
The statement says that through Sunday’s gathering, the larger Maya communities lent their support and continue to stand with Santa Cruz.
The spiritual leaders focused on the significance of coming together as one and the importance of walking together in love and righteousness.
They also prayed for all the community and government leaders.
The statement notes that on Tuesday, (today) the group of thirteen residents of Santa Cruz who were arrested and charged in the Rupert Myles detention incident of June twentieth, will be returning to the Magistrate’s Court in Punta Gorda town.
Today is the adjourn date for the continuation of the case against the group, including the Alcalde and the Chairman of Santa Cruz village, for allegedly infringing on the rights of Mr. Myles as they attempted to evict him from the land he occupies within the village which is in the archaeological area of Uxbenka.
