Alex becomes a Hurricane in the eastern Atlantic Ocean
San Ignacio, CAYO. Thursday, January 14, 2016. TNC: The rare January subtropical storm named Alex continues to make history in the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
Alex has been upgraded to a hurricane, the first to form in the month of January since 1938, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Alex is carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, and little change in strength is expected through Friday when it moves near or over portions of the Azores.
The category 1 Hurricane is currently about 490 miles south of the Central Azores, prompting hurricane warnings of some of the islands and tropical storm warning for a couple more in the eastern Azores.
