Government issues statement on shooting of BDF soldier

San Ignacio, CAYO. Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Late this evening, an official press release was issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the shooting of Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey on Holy Saturday.

The official release opens by saying that “the Government of Belize has requested the Office ofthe Organization of American States (OAS) in the Adjacency Zone to conduct an investigation   into   the   circumstances   surrounding   the   March   26,   2016   shooting incident.”

The official government press release says that the shooting happened 400 meters inside of Belize’s territory “in the Valentin Camp area in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve.”

The official statement says that members of the BDF stationed at the Valentin Conservation Post were on routine water supply and administration task around 4:50 pm on Saturday “when they came under fire from men armed with rifles.”

As we reported previously Sergeant Lambey is listed in stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial  Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The government release explains that “immediately  upon  receipt  of the  report  of the  shooting incident,  the  Ministry  of Foreign Affairs made contact with senior officials of the Organization of American States and Belize’s Ambassador in Guatemala for them to take necessary action to determine who is responsible for the incident.”

A promise has been made that the “details on the outcome of the investigation will be released to the public as soon as the report becomes available.”
