Honduran Garifuna leader passes away
San Ignacio, CAYO. Monday, April 11, 2016. News has been received of the death of Honduran Garifuna leader fifty seven year old Celeo Alvarez Casildo.
According to Honduran media reports, Alvarez Casildo died this morning a hospital in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where he was undergoing medical treatment for what was reported to be throat cancer.
Alvarez Casildo rose to prominence in the 1980’s with his activism which led to the establishment of the Ethnic Community Development Organization.
He was a longtime leader of the National Federation of Workers of Honduras and Union of Medicine, Hospitals and Allied Workers.
The National Garifuna Council of Belize notes with sadness the passing of Celeo Alvarez Casildo whom it recognizes has having contributed to the advancement of black people and the NGC.
The National Garifuna Council mourns his lost and extends sympathy to his family and organizations in Honduras.
