Police implement mitigation operations in Belize City
Belize City, BELIZE. Sunday, April 17, 2016. Police in Belize city have stepped up their operational presences in known gang areas in the wake of the Saturday night murder of Gerald Tillett.
Tillett was fatally wounded in a shooting incident last night in Dangriga town, Stann Creek.
In a Facebook post this morning, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chester Williams explains that the purpose for the enhanced police operations in Belize City is “with a view to mitigate any likely retaliation.”
ACP Williams is appealing to Belize City residents in particular to “bear patience” as these stepped-up operations are implemented “as what will be done is necessary to ensure the safety of all while respecting the rights of those grieving for the loss of their loved one.”
Police have not yet released an official version of what took place, but sources in Dangriga say that the popular recreational spot known as Wadani Shed, was crowded with people playing dominoes, when a lone gunman targeted Tillett, a resident of Belize City.
Tillett, according to unconfirmed reports, was socializing with friends when the shooting happened.
Two other men were wounded in the same shooting incident and a third person was reported to have also been injured.
Investigations continue.
