US Embassy raises LGBT Flag in Belmopan
Belmopan, CAYO. Thursday, June 23, 2016. The United States Embassy in Belize today hoisted the rainbow flag at the Embassy compound in Belmopan.
A brief statement posted on its social media page explains that the flying of the LGBT flag is in commemoration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.
The LGBT flag which is being flown just below the flag of the USA, will remain at the Embassy until the end of the month.
The US Embassy social media post says that “the U.S. Government is committed to the defence of the human rights of all persons, including lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender people.”
The celebration of LGBT Pride Month in June every year is in honor of the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan which according to the U.S. Embassy, “were a tipping point for the LGBT movement in the U.S.”
