Trio charged for series of theft around Placencia village
Placencia, STANN CREEK. Thursday, July 21, 2016. On Sunday, July 17, Placencia Police received several reports of outboard engine thefts from different areas in the Village.
Placencia Police quickly launched an investigation and officers were led to the area of Sun Set Point, south of Placencia Village.
Upon their arrival police found a blue in color Chrysler minivan parked beside the lagoon, and in it they found a man who identified himself as Erwin Fredrick Castillo of a Belize City address.
A further search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of two outboard engines, which police believed were stolen.
A few feet away, around a docked boat police say they also saw two men, who upon seeing the police absconded and were quickly apprehended.
They were later identified as Ian Francis Haylock Jr and Charles Elroy Young, also of Belize City addresses.
All three men were informed of the offences committed and were taken to the Placencia Police Station along with the van and outboard engines.
Police later formally and arrested and charged thirty three year old Erwin Frederick Castillo, twenty seven year old Ian Francis Haylock Jr and twenty six year old Elroy Charles Young jointly for the crimes of theft and handling stolen goods.
On Tuesday of this week, all three accused were taken before resident Magistrate Yolanda De-Moya at the Independence Magistrate Court where they were formally arraigned.
All three men pleaded “not guilty”, but the prosecution, represented by Inspector Dennis Miles, objected to bail on the grounds that the prosecution has very strong and compelling evidence against the accused; that the crime of engine theft has become a prevalent crime on the peninsula; that there is an ongoing investigation into the theft of two other outboard engines, of which all the defendants are suspects, and if released with interfere with the investigation, and that all three defendants have had previous charges for capital crimes and other crimes of dishonesty.
Magistrate De-Moya upheld the prosecutions objections and remanded all three defendants to prison until their next court date on August 11, 2016.
