US Government gives Belize a disaster relief warehouse
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Saturday, October 29, 2016. The United States government has gifted Belize with Disaster Relief Warehouse and Emergency Operations Center for the Toledo district.
Inauguration of the facilities was held on Friday at the Machaca Forest Station, eleven miles outside of Punta Gorda town along the Southern Highway.
The facilities, valued at US$1.5 million, were constructed by the United Sates Southern Command, with funding from its Humanitarian Assistance Project.
The Humanitarian Assistance Program partnership works with Belize to strengthen and supplement local response and recovery efforts.
This Disaster Relief Warehouse and the Emergency Operation Center are the first such facilities in the Toledo District.
They will be used by NEMO, the National Emergency Management Organization, to effectively coordinate disaster response and relief efforts and will enable NEMO to provide timely assistance to the people of Belize, especially those in remote areas.
According to a press statement from the US Embassy in Belize, this project builds on the Embassy’s long term disaster assistance to the Government of Belize, which has reached over US$10.6 million since 2006.
Present at the inauguration of the Disaster Relief Warehouse and Emergency Operations Center were Minister of National Emergency Management Edmond Castro, chairperson of NEMO Toledo, Mayor Fern Gutierrez, NEMO national coordinator Shelton DeFour and US Ambassador to Belize Carlos Moreno.
