WestJet begins direct flight to Belize
Ladyville, BELIZE. Saturday, October 29, 2016. The inaugural direct flight from Canada to Belize landed at the Phillip Goldson International Airport just before noon today.
WestJet Flight 2604 departed from Toronto Pearson International Airport this morning amidst a celebration by airline officials who hailed the event as WestJet’s becoming the only Canadian airline with a nonstop flight to Belize.
Executive Vice President (Commercial) for WestJet Bob Cummings, tells Canada’s Newswire that “leaving Canada and hitting the beaches in Belize by mid-day is something that Canadian travelers are not used to and we have absolutely changed the game with our twice-weekly service from Toronto.”
Director of Tourism Karen Bevans also hailed the establishment of the direct route between Belize and Canada saying “this is a very exciting moment for the tourism stakeholders in Belize.”
Bevans says that making the new WestJet service a reality in Belize comes after months of planning and comes at an opportune time as the tourism high season for Belize approaches.
The Belize Tourism executive says the WestJet service to Belize will now make it easier for Canadians to travel to Belize.
It is a sentiment that is shared by the Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia, Jr., who is quoted in the Canadian press as saying “this is truly a historic milestone for our nation [Belize].”
With a layover in the United States no longer a necessity, Heredia says he expects a significant increase in Canadian visitors to Belize.
Belize is WestJet’s 21st destination in the Caribbean and third destination in Central America.
The WestJet service to Belize will include twice-weekly flights departing Toronto at 9:15 am. The return flight leaves Belize at 12:50 pm on the same day.
