President of Haiti assassinated; Belize sends condolences
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Wednesday, July 7, 2021. The government of Belize has sent a note of condolences to the people of Haiti in the wake of the assassination of President Jovenel Jovenel Moïse.
International media reports say President Moise was killed during an attack on his private residence early on Wednesday.
The assassination was confirmed by Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who has declared a state of siege in the country.
The attackers, according to international media reports, stormed Moise’s home at around 1 a.m. and fatally wounded the head of state, according to the acting prime minister, who described the assassination as a “heinous, inhumane and barbaric act.”
Haiti’s first lady, Martine Moise, was also shot in the attack.
In its diplomatic note issued on Wednesday, the government of Prime Minister John Briceno condemned the assassination saying “such a heinous act of political violence has no place in democratic societies or in the Caribbean Community, which is firmly committed to the rule of law and democratic principles.”
The Belize statement goes on to say that “the Government extends its deepest condolences to the people of Haiti, who have already endured decades of immeasurable suffering and hardship. It is the Government’s hope that with regional and international solidarity and support, the Haitian people will emerge from this latest crisis to find a path to peace and stability.”
Later on Wednesday, Prime Minister Briceno expressed personal condolences to the government and people of Haiti. In a post on his personal Facebook page, PM Briceno wrote: “prayers and condolences from Rossana and me go out to the family of Haitian President, Jovenel Moise. May those who committed this heinous act be held accountable. I encourage the people of our regional neighbors, Haiti, to move forward through these uncertain times peacefully.”
