Anglican Church votes to endorse woman as bishops
The governing body of the Church of England has voted to endorse women as bishops in the Anglican Church.
The vote this morning ended a 20-year impasse and reports from London, England say that today’s development could see women being ordained as senior clergy in the Anglican Church by the end of next year.
According to a report carried by Reuters, “the issue of female clergy has divided global Anglicanism.Women serve as bishops in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand but Anglican churches in many developing countries do not even ordain them as priests.”
The spiritual head of the Church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, supports women bishops but has struggled to unite the mother church for the world’s 80 million Anglicans on the issue.
