Another provocation by Guatemala; SATIIM rangers intercepted
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Wednesday, April 6, 2016. There is more tension on the Sarstoon as the Guatemalan military has again intercepted another group of Belizeans in the area.
This time int is a group of rangers from the Sarstoon-Temash Institute for Indigenous Management, SATIIM and at least one village leader from rural Toledo who were intercepted by the Guatemalan military at the Sarstoon River.
According to Wil Maheia, the founder and leader of the Belize Territorial Volunteers, the SATIIM rangers, were intercepted at the Sarstoon River on Tuesday morning by Guatemalan military and told that they needed to first get permission from Guatemala to continue traversing the Sarstoon River.
The latest action by Guatemala is a radical shift in procedure for the SATIIM rangers who have been traversing the Sarstoon for years without having to first getting permission from Guatemala to patrol the area.
The Executive Director of SATIIM Froyla Tzalam says that the rangers were intercepted by the Guatemalan military in the Black Creek area and were told that they needed prior approval from the Guatemala military to enter the Sarstoon River.
There has been no official comment or response from the government of Belize regarding this latest provocation by Guatemalan on the Sarstoon River.
