Armed gunman makes off with large sum of money
Police in Belize City have one person detained for questioning following a weekend armed hold up that netted thieves over $46,000. The heist happened on Saturday evening. Police say that around 4:30 pm, a security officer working for James Brodies & Company Limited was on his way to the Albert Street branch of First Caribbean International Bank to make a cash deposit when he was held up. According to police, the 52 year old security guard was accosted from behind by a gun-toting man described as being of brown complexion who demanded the plastic back the Brodies employee was carrying. The guard complied with the request and handed over the bag which contained four cash bags with a total of BZ$46,064.42. Police say that after the hold up, the thief ran on to Church street, then got on a bicycle from a man at the corner of Church Street and Duck Land and road away toward East Canal making good his escape. The description of the assailant given by the security guard is that he is about 5 feet 9 inches tall, slim built, low hair cut and wore a cap, dark shades, light brown shirt with checkered stripes and a black long pants. Police say they have one person detained for questioning as their investigations continue.
