Attempted murder charge for man who allegedly attacked an on-duty policeman
Belize City, Belize. Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Formal charges have been brought against Darren Gillett, the man who police believe viciously attacked Constable Jason Hall on Monday on the Phillip Goldson Highway.
PC Hall was brutally beaten and left hospitalized in the attach which happened at Rhaburn Ridge community in the Belize District.
Darren Gillett was read charges of attempted murder, dangerous harm, use of deadly means of harm and robbery of Police Constable Jason Hall of Orange Walk Town.
On June 29, while Constable Hall was repairing a flat tire on the roadside, reportedly with Gillett’s assistance, Gillett suddenly attacked him with a gas tank and left him for dead after reportedly stealing his silver 4-door Mazda vehicle valued at $13,500.
Police later recovered the stolen vehicle.
According to police, Gillett also took Hall’s cellular phone valued at $450, his wallet containing $400 and personal documents.
When Gillett was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith the prosecutor objected to bail for Gillett because he had previously escaped from police custody and might be a flight risk.
He also pointed out that the prosecution thus far has a strong case against him and added that officer Hall remains in critical condition in hospital.
The Chief Magistrate sent Gillett to jail until August 4, when he returns to court.
