The annual summer camp for the Belize Defence Force Youth Cadet Corps was held this year in the Toledo district.

The venue for the event which ran from August 3 to August 10 was the Julian Cho Technical High School.

An official release from the Ministry of National Security says that close to 300 cadets from around the country attended the camp.

During the course of the camp, the cadets took part in drills, band practice, environmental study, physical training and learned about first aid and personal hygiene.

Just before the conclusion of the camp, the Honorable the Minister of National Security Mr. John Saldivar visited the cadets, along with the Commander of the BDF Brigadier General David Jones and other dignitaries.

The official release says that Minister Saldivar inspected a guard of honor mounted by the cadets and later had lunch with the youths.

The BDF Youth Cadet Corps, which was started in 2008, is now 650 members strong, 120 additional members having been added over the past year as part of a commitment by Minister of National Security.

The government press release ends by saying that “the addition of 120 new members over the past years was the first step towards fulfilling that commitment, with additional increases due 2014 and 2015 to bring the total membership to the 1,000 that was promised.”
