BEL helps out senior citizens
Belize City, BELIZE. Thursday, February 2, 2017. The state-owned Belize Electricity Limited, BEL, is giving light bill discounts to over a thousand senior citizens across the country.
A brief press release today announced that 1,110 persons 65 years or older is getting the discount.
The move by BEL has been welcomed by HelpAge Belize, an organization that looks after the well being of the nation’s senior citizens.
Executive Director of HelAge Belize Ivorine Bulwer says the offer of the discounts by BEL is seen as a contribution to the improving the quality of life for older persons in Belize and “is an indication of the Company’s appreciation for those who have contributed to the growth and development of the Belizean society.”
BEL started the program back in 2012 and since then, the company says that the number of awardees has been steadily increasing.
For 2017, BEL has more than doubled the amount of persons getting the senior citizens discounts compared to the 600 that received the incentive last year.
Aside from being a minimum of 65 years old to qualify, a senior citizen must have only one active account with BEL registered in their name, must have their account updated and present their Golden Citizen’s Social Security Card to be eligible for inclusion in the program.
