Belize assumes chair of OAS Permanent Council
San Ignacio, CAYO. Thursday, January 12, 2017. Belize has taken up chairmanship of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, OAS.
Belize’s Permanent Representative to the OAS Patrick Andrews assumed the chairmanship this week during a ceremony which was held at OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Ambassador Andrews will hold the chairmanship until March 31.
His vice chairman during this current tenure of the rotating chairman ship is being held by the Honduran representative at the OAS.
According to a press release from the OAS, Ambassador Andrews plans to make climate change and sustainable development key agenda items during his chairmanship of the Permanent Council.
Ambassador Andrews describes his ascension to the Chair of the Permanent Council as “an incredible opportunity”, something that each Member State of the OAS gets to enjoy and an occasion to leave his mark “in elevating the institution’s history and in contributing to its betterment and that of our Hemisphere.”
Belize took over chairmanship of the OAS Permanent Council from Barbados.
Ambassador Selwin Charles Hart thanked Secretary General Luis Almagro and his colleagues in the Council for the support received during his term.
