Belize falls to El Salvador in Copa Centroamericana 2017
San Ignacio, CAYO. Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Belize’s national football team, the Jaguars, fell to El Salvador by a score of 3-1 today in the ongoing Copa Centroamericana 2017.
The match was played at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, Panama.
It was the first victory for El Salvador in the tournament and with the loss today, Belize drops to 6th place in the standings with two more games to play.
The first goal of the match was scored in the 15th minute of play off a header from Gerson Mayen.
The second goal came at the 19th minute off the left foot of Juan Barahona.
The third goal for El Salvador was scored in the 22nd minutes off of a corner kick by Henry Romero.
The sole goal for Belize was scored by super striker Deon McCaulay in the first half of play.
The next outing for the Belize Jaguars will be against Nicaragua on Thursday.
Belize concludes this round of play in the Copa Centroamericana 2017 against Honduras.
The top four teams will advance to the next round, while the fifth place team will get to play against a team from the Caribbean for the fifth spot in the next round.
The current standings show Honduras in the lead with an undefeated 2-0 record and 6 points.
Costa Rica is next with one win and two draws, giving them 5 points.
El Salvador is third with one win, one loss and 1 draw. They have four points.
Panama is in fourth position with one win and one draw and also with 4 points.
Nicaragua is fifth with no wins, one draw and two losses. They have 1 point.
Belize’s record is no wins, 1 draw and two losses. Belize has 1 point, earned from the draw with Panama.
