Belize makes no commitments on stranded Cuban migrants
Belmopan, CAYO. Tuesday, December 8, 2015. The government of Prime Minister Dean Barrow will “participate in a regional discussion to identify the necessary mechanisms to address the Cuban migrants transiting through the region.”
That is the decision coming out of today’s Cabinet meeting in Belmopan.
A late evening statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said that the proposal to facilitate the movement of the Cubans currently stuck at the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border that was presented by the Government of Costa Rica was thoroughly discussed among Cabinet members today.
The official statement says that “after careful consideration” the Cabinet members agreed that the situation was “a regional problem” and should be approached in that context.
“At this juncture, the Government of Belize is unable to make any commitments outside of a regional arrangement,” he government of Belize statement said.
The government of Costa Rica had asked Belize to allow its “facilities” to be used as a transit/staging area for thousands of Cuban migrants who are stuck at the Costa Rica/Nicaragua border and intending to travel to the United States of America.
