Belize referendum date announced

Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Belizeans will go to the polls on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 to decide whether or not Guatemala’s unfounded claim to over half of our country should be referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final resolution.

Guatemala held its national referendum last month, where despite low voter turnout, the majority of those who voted said YES to going to the ICJ to resolve Guatemala’s claim.

A government press release on Monday announced that Cabinet had agreed to the April 10, 2019 date for Belize’s national referendum where Belizeans will vote a simple NO or YES on “whether or not to take the dispute arising from Guatemala’s claim to Belize’s land and insular territories and to the maritime areas pertaining to them” to the ICJ for what both countries agree will be a binding decision.

The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the government press release will now step up its national public awareness campaign which is designed “to reach citizens in every corner of the country.”

Belizeans are being encouraged to learn as much as they can about the upcoming referendum so that they can make their decision based on facts when they go into the polling booth on April 10, 2019.
