Belizean student wins regional video competition
San Ignacio Town, Cayo. Thursday, May 21, 2015. Belizean student 17 year old Tysha Roni Roches who attends St. Catherine Academy had won the 2015 Regional World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Video Competition.
Roches’ winning entry “ICT and Me” bested the other entries and she claims first prize, with students from Suriname taking second and third prizes.
According to a press release announcing the results of the competition, CANTO explains that Roches’ video provided information and enlightenment for viewers about “the evolution of communication and how it shapes and creates an innovative environment through ICT and Telecommunication platforms.”
The CANTO press release quotes Roches as saying “I feel excited and I am proud of myself that I could create something so good..”
Roches, who aspires to a career in ICT, tells CANTO that she has previous experience in videography and wanted to see how her work would be viewed outside of Belize.
For her prize, Roches won a trip for 2 plus hotel accommodation to the organization’s 31st Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition in Miami, Florida, USA, scheduled for July 26 – July 29; a Tablet plus US$1,000.
The Regional WTISD Video competition was opened to students between the ages of 14 and 18 years old in all 35 member countries of CANTO.
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is spearheaded by the International Telecommunication Union and CANTO commemorates this day with an annual video competition on the respective ITU theme. This year the theme was ‘Telecommunications and ICTs: Drivers of innovation’.
