Belizeans celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day
Dangriga, STANN CREEK. Friday, November 20, 2015. Thousands of Belizeans traveled to the southern districts of the country yesterday and Belize observed Garifuna Settlement Day.
The day signifies the mass arrival of the Garinagu to our shores is 1832 following their displacement from St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The day’s activities on Thursday included a re-enactment of the first arrival led by Alejo Beni.
Also featured were a church service and a massive street parade to celebrate the Garifuna culture.
Garifuna Settlement Day was birthed by Thomas Vincent Ramos in 1941 and was initially celebrated as a holiday only in the Stann Creek and Toledo districts starting in 1943.
It was not until 1977 that Garifuna Settlement Day was declared a national holiday.
