Business establishments caught price-gouging
San Ignacio, CAYO. Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Four business establishments, one from Corozal and three in Punta Gorda town have been taken to court and the owners convicted for breaking the laws on price control.
In Corozal, the J-Mart Supermarket failed to indicate the price of goods, which is contrary to section 15 of the Supplies Control Prices Regulations.
They were prosecuted and the Magistrate in Corozal imposed a fine of $150.
In Punta Gorda town, PG Shop, Brad’s Store and Jose Maria Super Store were found to be selling controlled goods at a price higher than the maximum selling price permitted.
This is contravention of Section 10, Subsection 1 of the Supplies Control Prices Regulations.
On conviction the proprietors of these business establishments were each fined $500 by the Magistrate in Punta Gorda town.
The Belize Bureau of Standards says it had the assistance of the Police Department’s Legal Advisor in successfully prosecuting the offending business establishments.
Three additional charges are being prepared against establishments in the Stann Creek district and the Bureau says it will continue to be vigilant on law breakers.
