By-Election underway for Dangriga constituency
Dangriga town, Stann Creek. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Residents of the Dangriga constituency, which also includes Hope Creek and Sarawee villages, are today choosing a new area representative.
Today’s by-election was necessary after the abrupt resignation last month of Ivan Ramos, who was elected in 2012 as a member of the People’s United Party.
Three candidates are contesting today’s by-election.
Former Dangriga Mayor Frank Mena is trying to win the seat for the United Democratic Party (UDP), while school teacher Anthony Sabal is trying to keep keep the seat in the control of the People’s United Party (PUP).
Pastor Llywelyn Lucas is the third candidate who is running on an Independent ticket.
Reports from Dangriga throughout the course of the day indicated that the bulk of the activity was at the Holy Ghost Primary School where there has been a steady flow of voters from the time the polls opened at seven o’clock this morning.
There were reports of minor skirmishes during the course of the day and supporters of both major mass parties jostled to get voters entering the different polling stations.
By 3 pm today only 38% eligible voters – 6,275 voters – had actually cast a ballot, which is lower than expected.
By the time the polls close at 6 pm, it is expected that the percentage of eligible voters who would have voted will have increased significantly.
Reconciliation and counting of the votes will take place at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall.
