Countryside Park, Spanish Lookout. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. The Cayo district finals for the National Coca Cola Spelling Bee was held this afternoon in Spanish Lookout.
Fourteen of the top spellers from seven zones across the Cayo district competed in a tightly contested spell-off to earn the right to represent the Cayo district in the Nationals which will be held on June fifth in Corozal Town.
And in the end, Benita Caal from the Kuxlin Ha Government School was able to fend off all the other challengers, taking the first place prize this afternoon.
Second place was won by Laura Menendez from the Buena Vista Government School.
The third place or alternate is Ronan Stewart from Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School in San Ignacio town.
It is the twenty first consecutive year that Bowen and Bowen is sponsoring the Spelling Bee in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and corporate sponsors.
This year, the National Coca Cola Spelling Bee is being held under the theme: “Shaping young minds one word at a time,” as 2015 marks the centennial of the contour of the Coca Cola bottle.
