Cayo Softball honors veteran coach
Roaring Creek, CAYO. Sunday, March 13, 2016. In keeping with the spirit of the saying “no wait ’till the man dead, fuh tell am ih good” (don’t wait until the man is dead to tell him he is good), the Cayo Amateur Softball Association today honored veteran coach Raymond Garbutt by naming the 2016 female competition in his honor.
The 2016 Raymond Garbutt Female Softball Competition started today, Sunday, March 13, with three games that were scheduled to be played in Roaring Creek village.
Mr. Garbutt has been coaching softball for more than four decades and has coached his team the Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy female team to many district and national championships.
Today, as part of the kick-off of the 2016 competition which is featuring 6 teams, Mr. Garbutt threw out the official first pitch to a round of applause from grateful fans and supporters.
Following the games played today, Mr. Garbutt told reporters that “it feels good” and that “I am honored” that the Association has decided to recognize his contribution to the development of softball in this country by naming the 2016 competition in his honor.
When asked what is next for him now that he is retired from coaching, Mr. Garbutt responded: “coaching softball. And lending my expertise when it is needed and necessary.”
The teams taking part in the 2016 Female competition are: Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy, Belmopan Bandits, Esperanza Wolverines, Unitedville Rebels United, Belmopan Emeralds and Camalote.
Only two of the three games scheduled for today were played. Belmopan Bandits won their first game of the competition via default as Camalote was a no-show. Kenreen Gillett is credited with the victory.
The second game saw Unitedville Rebels United dispatching the Esperanza Wolverines via the Mercy Rule, giving Nikita Perez the easy victory.
The last game of the day, saw Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy quickly dispatching of Belmopan Emeralds via the Mercy Rule 12-1 giving Leandra Guy the easy victory over Dominga Tut.
On March 20, games will be played at the Mae Gordon Stadium in Belmopan.
