Coast Guard incident involves visiting Dominica Prime Minister
Dominicans are reacting with a mixture of surprise, amusement and mild outrage after reports reach Roseau that there was an incident involving a breach of protocol involving Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
Prime Minister Skerrit was a guest of the government of Belize on the occasion of Belize’s 32nd Independence anniversary.
Channel 7 News reported on Tuesday evening that during a return trip from the Hol Chan Marine Reserve on Saturday, a vessel in which Prime Minister Skerrit was traveling was intercepted by the Belize National Coast Guard.
Channel 7 News reported that Coast Guard personnel prevented the boat from proceeding and the situation was only diffused when a call was placed and a Ministry of Tourism official intervened.
At no time during the incident was Prime Minister Skerrit’s personal safety compromised; but the incident is turning out to be quite a diplomatic embarrassment for Belize.
Channel 7 news says that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
