Costa Rica not happy with Belize’s decision on Cuban migrants
San Ignacio, CAYO. Tuesday, December 9, 2015. Reaction to the Belize government’s decision not to commit to helping Cuban migrants trying to reach the United States of America “outside of a regional arrangement” has been swift.
In San Jose, Costa Rica, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuel Gonzalez today expressed disappointment at the decision of Cabinet that “the Government of Belize is unable to make any commitments outside of a regional arrangement.”
The Associated Press is reporting that the Costa Rican Foreign Minister, in a statement, said that “we feel deeply disillusioned with the Belize decision.”
The Costa Rican Foreign Minister said that with no firm commitment from Belize, “this decision complicates significantly the situation of the migrants in Costa Rica and delays their exit from the country.”
Some 3,000 Cuban migrants were left stranded at the Costa Rica border with Nicaragua after Nicaragua decided to close its borders in mid-November.
That was after Costa Rica had granted the Cuban migrants visas to transit the country on their journey north.
Costa Rica was proposing an “air corridor” that wound land the Cubans in Belize and facilitate their onward travel to Mexico.
