COVID-19 case confirmed in Belize
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Monday, March 23, 2020. Prime Minister Dean Barrow this morning announced that Belize has confirmed its first case of the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.
According to the Prime Minister the case is that of a 38 year old woman from San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye.
According to reports, confirmed by the Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero, the COVID-19 patient traveled to Belize from Los Angeles last Thursday.
Health officials further confirmed that she started showing signs of a dry cough and shortness of breath and a subsequent test revealed the positive diagnosis for COVID-19.
The patient is now in isolation in San Pedro and her family members are being tested.
Health officials have begun the process of back-tracking to see all who this woman may have been in contact with during her flight into Belize and subsequent travel to San Pedro.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow appealed to residents of San Pedro not to travel to the mainland. He also encouraged Belizeans not to travel to San Pedro except in cases of emergency.
The COVID-19 oversight committee went into a meeting in Belize City and new measures are expected to be announced later today to deal with the situation now that COVID-19 is confirmed in Belize.
