COVID-19 death toll rises
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Wednesday, November 18, 2020. The death toll from COVIC-19 continues to inch upwards as tonight there are 4 more deaths to add to the total.
According to data published by the office of the Director of Health Services, the four recorded deaths are men in their 80’s and 90’s from the Corozal, Cayo and Stann Creek districts.
There are 38 new cases of COVID-19 to add to the countrywide total, reflecting a 23.2% positivity rate.
The official data noted that there were 20 recovered. That means that of all the positive cases that have been detected so far in Belize, 43.9% are currently active.
In his address to the nation on Wednesday night, Prime Minister John Briceño reported that based on a presentation on Monday by the Director of Health Services, members of Cabinet “were shocked to learn that there is no real plan to contain the spread of the virus.”
“While we expected it to be bad, the depths of mismanagement are truly scandalous,” the Prime Minister said.
Briceño said Cabinet instructed the Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat to meet with his technical team and advisors to develop a comprehensive plan to address the spread of the virus.
That plan is expected to be presented to Cabinet at its next meeting on Tuesday.
