Death and destruction in the wake of Tropical Storm Amanda
Punta Gorda, TOLEDO. Sunday, May 31, 2020. Heartbreaking images of death and destruction are emerging from El Salvador and Guatemala where Tropical Storm Amanda ploughed into the Central America mainland on Sunday.
Amanda was the first named storm of the 2020 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season which started on May 15, 2020 and runs through November 30, 2020.
Tropical Storm Amanda quickly fell apart after moving inland, but the copious amount of rainfall it brought to El Salvador and Guatemala is being blamed for at least a dozen deaths in El Salvador.
And forecasters say another 10 to 15 inches of rainfall are expected in the days ahead as the remnants of TS Amanda continues to push north-northwesterly and could emerge into the southern Bay of Campeche later this week.
Scores of houses have been destroyed in San Salvador and in Guatemala images show widespread flooding and damage to property.
As of tonight (Sunday), the remnants of what was Tropical Storm Amanda was located over northern Guatemala.
Experts at the National Hurricane Center are of the opinion that when the remnants emerge over the southeastern Bay of Campeche on Monday, there is a medium chance that it could develop into a new tropical depression as the environmental conditions appear to be conducive to support further development.
A bulletin published by the National Hurricane Center on Sunday evening noted that “regardless of tropical cyclone formation,
heavy rainfall is likely to continue over portions of southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, and western Honduras during the next few days.”
Forecaster Francisca Wellington at the Belize Weather Bureau, in her Sunday evening general forecast, reported that “some showers, periods of rain and isolated thunderstorms will continue to affect the country on Monday night, then decrease during Tuesday.”
The Weather Bureau advisory warns that flooding due to heavy and persistent rainfall over the country is a high possibility.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas need to be on alert in the days ahead.
