DOE says no more burning of garbage
Belmopan, CAYO. Saturday, March 28, 2020. Belizeans are being urged to discontinue the practice of burning of household and yard waste.
A statement issued on Friday afternoon explains that the prevalence of what Department of the Environment calls “harmful practice” is a contributing factor to the reduction in air quality “and threatens life and property” especially at this time of the year, which is considered the dry season.
Officials say that the burning of waste “emits invisible but harmful substances into the air that are breathed in by residents in nearby communities, including vulnerable persons such as the elderly, babies, and those suffering from respiratory diseases.”
The Department of the Environment is appealing to the general public to discontinue the practice of burning of water, no mater if its in town, cities or villages.
“Air pollution is regulated under the Pollution Regulations, which states that it is illegal to allow or permit contaminants to be emitted or discharged either directly or indirectly into the air from sources without a permit from the DOE,” says an official statement from the Department of the Environment.
Persons found to be violating the law will be prosecuted.
