Family and colleagues mourn the murder of Belize City journalist
Belize City, Belize. Monday, July 6, 2015. Police in Belize City are investigating the murder of journalist Kareem Clarke.
The body of the twenty seven year old man was found near the Vernon Street bridge around one o’clock this morning with multiple gunshot wounds to the left side of the forehead, back of the bead, abdomen and the middle of the back.
Police say that their initial investigations reveal that Clarke was riding his bicycle on Vernon Street in the direction of the bridge when he was approached by a man who fired several shots in his direction, fatally injuring him.
Police say they have recovered a total of eight expended shells from the scene of the crime as their investigations continue.
It is all depressingly familiar, and so too are the tears of his family, to whom we spoke this morning as they remembered their fallen loved one.
His sister told reporters that Kareem was well-liked and certainly had no enemies who wanted him dead; while his mother, Julia Clarke, indicated that Kareem was not one to report any threats, if any, in his daily life to his family.
From the police’s perspective, Superintendent Hilberto Romero of Eastern Division says they have neither motive nor suspects.
However, they have a major problem, as the Vernon Street/Lakeview area has now seen its third murder in a week following those of Ruben Leslie and Tyrique Thompson last week.
The Superintendent says police were too far away to stop this one, but they will double down on their efforts.
Kareem Clarke worked as a journalist with the Amandala newspaper and today, the media organization sent out a statement expressing deep regrets at Clarke’s murder.
The statement reads: “we are still in disbelief over the tragic loss of this very promising and ambitious young journalist.”
The Amandala statement went on to say that Kareem began working with the Newspaper two years ago, and quickly proved himself as an up-and-coming writer, creatively and comprehensively covering several lead stories for the Amandala.
The statement ends by noting that “the Kremandala Family will surely miss his invaluable contributions,” noting that Kareem contributed news stories for KREM Radio and KREM Television.
