Family expresses concern over detention of Santa Elena man
The family of a Santa Elena man is concerned for his wellbeing after he was taken into police custody earlier this week.
Leopoldo Waight, 29, has been in detention by San Ignacio police, for what family members say is suspicion of being involved in a case of theft, even though no stolen items have been found on his person or at his home.
The concerns raised by a close relative of Mr. Waight is that he was being denied medical assistance since he has been bleeding from the nose while in police custody and they are concerned for his wellbeing as well as that of the other persons in detention.
Human rights activist Caleb Orozco, after concerns from the family reached his office, made a call to the San Ignacio police station trying to intervene on behalf of Mr. Waight; but he was bluntly turned down by officers on duty who told him “Mr. Orozco, I don’t want to entertain you, sorry about that, have a nice day.”
Orozco says that it was later explained to him that the brush off was because he is not a family member to Mr. Waight nor is he an attorney, therefore the officer felt no obligation to share any information with him.
Shortly after the query, a source familiar with the case confirmed, via text message, that Mr. Waight had been released from custody; however, this could not be independently verified with his family.
