Final day of the FIVB Qualification Tournament
Belize City, BELIZE. Friday, September 30, 2016. It is a day of contrast for Guatemala’s senior men’s volleyball team on the finals day of the Qualification Tournament in Belize City.
Guatemala looks to go undefeated in the week-long tournament after they defeated Panama in three straight sets on Thursday night.
Guatemala is now 5-0 and tonight they take on Nicaragua which appears will close out the tournament without winning any of its matches.
Nicaragua is 0-5. Guatemala has already secured one of the two spots that were up for grabs in this Tournament and will proceed to the next round in the qualification series for the world cup of Volleyball in 2018.
The Dominican Republic is the second team that will advance to the next round. The Dominican Republic is currently 4-1 and will play El Salvador in their final game of the tournament today and could close off the tournament with a 5-1 record.
Belize’s national Volleyball team will close out the Tournament playing its last game against Honduras.
Captain of the Belize Team Karym Coleman says he is confident of a victory, even though he admits it will not be a walk in the part to overcome Honduras.
A win for Belize almost certainly secures a bronze medal for the home team; but that would hinge on the Dominican Republic beating El Salvador .
At the start of play on Friday, the standings puts Guatemala in first with 24 points; Guatemala is next with 19 points; El Salvador is third with 15 points; and Belize is fourth with 13 points.
