Flood water abate as weather improves
San Ignacio, CAYO. Friday, November 20, 2015. Flood waters in the south and western parts of the country have gone down significantly since this time last weekend.
To low-lying wooden bridge spanning the Macal River in San Ignacio/Santa Elena was reopened to vehicular traffic on Thursday.
The Baking Pot ferry remains closed due to the flooded state of the Belize River, and further downstream, the Iguana Creek Bridge was reopened to traffic on Thursday.
But my mid-morning today, the level of the Belize River had risen significantly again and water had covered the deck of the bridge.
The Commander of the San Ignacio police formation Superintendent Andrew Ramirez had sent out an advisory via text message this morning that the Iguana Creek Bridge was closed to vehicular traffic, but when the TNC News Team arrived at the scene around 12:30 this afternoon, we saw various motorists braving the rushing waters on the deck of the bridge to get cross over.
We are not sure for how much longer the bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic, but we will continue to monitor the situation and updates will be posted on our Facebook page throughout the weekend.
