Funds unaccounted for at the Southern Regional Hospital

The Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Health Dr. Peter Allen has confirmed that thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars are unaccounted for at the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga.

Dr. Allen told Channel 7 News on Friday that an investigation by the Auditor General found that three cheques, totaling just over seven thousand dollars were made out and cashed from the account of the NHI newborn babies’ funds.

The thinking by Ministry of Health officials is that someone appears to have been running a “separate checking system” at the Southern Regional hospital which led to money being unaccounted for.

The cheques, according to CEO Allen were, were made out to “cash” or to the administrator.  But there is more.  Dr. Allen told Channel 7 that “what is more distressing is that they cannot account for 189 cheques.”

The logic of Dr. Allen’s thinking is that if 3 cheques totaled $7,060, then 189 other cheques could mean “very significant sums of money.”

Dr. Allen says that the Ministry of Health has forwarded the findings of the preliminary report along with copies of the three 3 cheques t to the Ministry of the Public Service and the Public Service Commission, recommending that the administrator Nasley Sommerville be suspended from that office.

The findings are significant enough that the Ministry of Health has also sent a file containing the preliminary report to the Dangriga police requesting their intervention in the matter.
