Garifuna Settlement Day activities scaled back
PUNTA GORDA, TOLEDO. Tuesday, November 17, 2020. The National Garifuna Council (NGC), is encouraging Belizeans to take all the precautions necessary as the celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 approaches.
This is the first celebration during the COVID-19 pandemic and the NGC has been hosting a variety of virtual activities that are designed to provide a safe environment in which the “vibrant Garifuna culture, language, music and dance” can be celebrated and highlights “while keeping social interaction to the minimum.”
With over two thousand active cases of COVID-19 in Belize, the NGC says that it is important we all be safe and take all relevant precautions to ensure safety during these challenging times of the pandemic.
As for the re-enactment of the arrival of the Garinagu to our shores, that celebration will more than likely be deferred this year as NGC is encouraging everyone to “stay home, avoid crowds, wear their masks properly, wash and or sanitize hands regularly, practice social distancing protocols and other preventative measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our beautiful Belize.”
The theme for this year’s Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations is “Garinagu: úara, here; awansera asta lidan liderenouga.”
Translated into English that means: “Garinagu: United and Strong, moving forward despite challenges.”
