Gaspar Vega is retiring from electoral politics
Orange Walk Town, ORANGE WALK. Thursday, March 10, 2016. The United Democratic Party (UDP) today announced that Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega is retiring from electoral politics at the end of the current term.
An official release from the UDP Secretariat this morning said that Mr. Vega, in a letter dated March 8, 2016, informed the Party of his decision not to stand again for his Orange Walk North seat in the next General Elections constitutionally due in 2020.
In addition to retiring from electoral politics, Mr. Vega has also informed the UDP that he will not continue as First Deputy Party Leader.
The UDP has a Convention scheduled for March 20, 2016, where the party was due to endorse its entire executive for another four years, including Vega as First Deputy Leader.
But with his decision to stand down, the UDP press release says all of the posts will still be endorsed but that choosing a new first Deputy Party Leader to succeed Vega will be decided on after the March 20 Convention.
Vega, according to the official release, has pledged to continue fully supporting the UDP and working with his successor to secure another victory in the Orange Walk North constituency when the next General Elections take place.
Vega remains a member of Cabinet and continues to hold the portfolios of as Minister of Agriculture Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development.
