Group calls on government to sign on to UNCAC
Belmopan, CAYO. Wednesday, December 9, 2015. Members of the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) are today holding a mini demonstration in front of the National Assembly Building in Belmopan.
Carrying placards, the small group of demonstrators is calling on the government of Belize to sign on to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, UNCAC.
The group of demonstrators includes 7 persons.
Incidentally, today is being observed as International Anti-Corruption Day with the theme: Break the Corruption Chain.
According to a United Nations release on the occasion of International Anti-Corruption Day “Governments, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, the media and citizens around the world are joining forces to fight this crime.”
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are named as being at the forefront of these efforts.
Says the UN press release: “the 2015 joint international campaign focuses on how corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law, leads to human rights violations, distorts markets, erodes quality of life and allows organized crime, terrorism and other threats to human security to flourish.”
Furthermore, the release says that “the campaign #breakthechain also highlights that corruption is a cross-cutting crime, impacting many areas. It shows that acting against corruption is imperative to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.”
