GSU fires on moving vehicle; one man injured
San Ignacio, CAYO. Thursday, February 25, 2016. A man from Bullet Tree Falls village in the Cayo district was wounded in a shooting incident last night.
Twenty eight year old Roberto Chan was shot in the shoulder, allegedly by a member of the Gang Suppression Unit, (GSU).
The official police version of the incident is that members of the GSU were conducting a vehicle check point on the Santa Rosa road last night, when a Toyota 4 Runner almost ran over a member of the GSU team.
Police say that was when the GSU fired shots at the vehicle. Chan was injured to the right shoulder and was taken to the San Ignacio community hospital for medical treatment.
Accompanying Chan in the vehicle at the time of the incident was his wife and children.
Chan’s wife says that as the vehicle approached an area she knows as La Linea, she heard two gunshots and then noticed her husband bleeding from thee right shoulder.
When the vehicle had come to a stop, the wife says she observed police officers dressed in camouflage who ordered them to exit the vehicle.
Police investigations continue.
