Guatemalan journalist claims bad treatment by Belizean authorities
Benque Viejo del Carmen, CAYO. Tuesday, January 16, 2018. A Guatemalan journalist purporting to be doing a story on his country’s unfounded claim to Belize, was asked to return to thee Guatemala side of the border today.
Identified as Rigoberto Escobar from the Guatevision and Prensa Libre outfits, the journalist was reportedly taking photographs of the Belize border station in Benque Viejo Del Carmen when he was approached by Belizean authorities and asked to desist from what he was doing.
Of course, in typical fashion, the Guatemala journalist tells a totally different story and is claiming that he was roughed up by Belizean authorities.
It is not certain if the journalist had the requisite legal clearance to be in Belize and to carry out his purported work as a journalist. The situation was expertly handled by the Belizean authorities at the border, despite claims to the contrary by media reports in Melchor de Mencos, Guatemala.
